Want to Be a Captain?

by Norris Comer

CaptainGuyIf you’re an avid boater who wants to take your knowledge into the professional sphere, the U.S. Maritime Academy’s (USMA) Captain License classes are here for you. The Coast Guard approved-training specializes in Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV or Six-Pack, required to charter six people or fewer on vessels less than 100 gross tons) and Master Licenses to 100 tons. Sailing and towing endorsements, one-day renewal classes, and application preparation are available as well.

The U.S Maritime Academy has over 3,000 graduates since 1985, and Director Captain Jeff Sanders wrote the textbooks and curriculum for the classes. There are evening class options to accommodate working folks, and the philosophy is retention of taught materials versus the cramming information to pass exams.

The complete schedules and course information are available at (360) 385-4852 and at usmaritime.us. The Center for Wooden Boats on South Lake Union is the location for the USMA Captain’s License Master/Six Pack to 100 Ton classes from September 28 to November 21, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1830 hours to 2130 hours. September 28 is an open, no-obligation Q&A information session at 1900 hours if you’re interested.
