Shadow – Loving Life in Her 60s

What can we say, we at Northwest Yachting and nwyachting.com are suckers for beautifully maintained classic boats. And this one is pretty special, her destiny shifted from serving her country to serving a succession of private owners. It’s worth noting how efficient this graceful lady is. Here’s John Price’s description of Shadow:

Shadow is a 50’ wooden pilot house trawler built in 1953. 1 of 3 from the US Navy, the hull is constructed of 1.5 fir planking on 1.5” x 2” oak frames.

The boat was never commissioned for naval use and Shields Boat Works out of L.A. finished them as private vessels. She’s powered by a Gray Marine 671 diesel, through a Borg-Warner Velvet Drive to a 24” bronze four blade propeller. It has a 4.5” dry stack exhaust and cooling is accomplished via a heat exchanger recessed in the hull. She’s 30 tons with a 15’ beam and draws 4 feet. She cruises 8 knots @ 1300 RPM and 4.5 GPH. She holds 760 gallons of diesel, 250 gallons water and even more wine. The current owner is the fifth, and lives aboard on Lake Union.
