Right before this year’s Big Seattle International Boat Show I got a call from the great folks at Evinrude who wanted to know if I wanted to see the next generation E-TEC outboards. The first generation was very impressive and as readers will recall we were part of that experiment in January of 2008 to run two identical boats, one with an Evinrude V4-115 and one with an Evinrude 115 E-TEC, around Bainbridge with identical amounts of fuel to see if there was a difference. Well the V-115 equipped boat after having gone almost all the way around the island died off of Port Madison, while the E-TEC equipped vessel made it all the way back to Elliott Bay Marina. Pretty impressive and that was in 2008 so I was eager to see what Evinrude had come up with for the second generation of E-TEC’s.

The one thing I do know about Evinrude is that they are a very numbers and facts oriented group so I was very impressed with their latest numbers. The new generation of E-TEC’s produce up to 75% fewer total regulated emissions, with 15% better fuel efficiency and 20% more torque than leading four-stroke engines.
