The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron will be hosting two boating courses starting in January; an America’s Boating Course and a Piloting Course focused on coast and inland navigation. The America’s Boating Course will cover basic boat handling, state and federal requirements, safety concerns, and the nautical rules of the road.
Successful completion of the course will earn students a Washington State Boater Education Card. The classes will be held at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club on January 4 and 11 from 0900 hours to 1500 hours. The cost is $55 per person, and the deadline to apply is December 30.
The Piloting Course will cover using GPS in navigation, but will also touches on traditional techniques students can fall back on in case their GPS fails. The classes include hands-on lessons focusing on charts, navigation aids, compasses, GPS, and plotting courses.
The Piloting Course is being held at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club every Thursday from January 7 to March 4, from 1800 hours to 2000 hours. Cost is $92 for members and $142 for non-members. To find out more or sign up, contact Karen Nelson at knelson2007@gmail.com
