The University of Washington’s Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) shares this work from researcher Caitlin Russel.
Text: From the The deep ocean is a harsh environment where animals must adapt to high pressure, cold temperatures, darkness and often low nutrient supply. During the VISIONS’13 expedition, Caitlin Russell, a Boston University undergraduate who participated in the UW School of Oceanography at-sea program aboard the R/V Thompson, utilized deep-sea imagery from the ROV’s Jason and ROPOS to document animals on the Juan de Fuca Ridge – many of which live at depths of 5000-7000 feet beneath the oceans surface (VISIONS’13 Leg 4).
