In what may very well be the most chest-hair-growing partnership in modern memory, Fremont Mischief Distillery has teamed up with Deadliest Catch celebrity crab captains Sig Hansen and Casey McManus, as well as co-captain Josh Harris, to make whiskey for charity at The Captain’s Whiskey Slam.
Fremont Mischief’s new rye whiskey, Storm Tossed Rye, is a special batch that has been barrel-aged aboard Sig Hansen’s Northwestern and Casey McManus’ and Josh Harris’ Cornelia Marie. The whiskey batch, aged on the two different boats, is going head-to-head in true Deadliest Catch competition style. The goal is to sell all of the Storm Tossed Ryewhiskey between the releasedate, August 20, and October 1 in order to donate $40,000 to Seattle’s Fisherman Memorial and Sea Scouts’ Propeller and Yankee Clipper educational vessel efforts. The vision for the event comes from Doug Dixon, manager of Pacific Fishermen Shipyard, and Mike Sherlock, owner of Fremont Mischief Distillery and 29-year veteran of commercial fishing.
“My Storm Tossed Rye is better than yours!” Hansen declared according to a press release. “Barrel aged in the rough, storm tossed West Bering Sea – my whiskey is smoky, richly flavored with a hint of the briny sea. Smooth sipping for whiskey lovers and strong enough for fishermen.”
The Cornelia Marie duo was quick to retort. “Rough water makes for rough whiskey,” they said. “Our Storm Tossed Rye was barrel-aged on the smooth, frigid Arctic seas a season longer than yours. The Cornelia Marie–Storm Tossed Rye is smooth, with caramel and woodsy smoke. People are going to love our whiskey. We bet it will sell out long before yours!”
Readers who follow the wildly successful reality T.V. show Deadliest Catch will be familiar with the friendly rivalry between the two crab boats that regularly pull in “big crab” as highliners. An Oregon-based spinoff of the show, Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove, is set to premiere in 2017.
Rumors abound of a Bottling Party with the fishermen on September 17 and an auction/BBQ on October 1. Stay tuned and see how to get your Storm Tossed Rye whiskey at fremontmischief.com. Celebrity crabbers, rye whiskey, and good causes, does it get any better than that?
