It was hard not to catch the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race fever when the fleet passed through Seattle in April (see our April 2016 feature, The Clipper Race Arrives). The international phenomenon is captured on film with the documentary series The Race of Their Lives 2, which picked up the prestigious award “Best Documentary Series-UK” at the recent industry TMT Media Awards. The show follows the racers who took on the latest iteration of the race, including vessel Visit Seattle, as they raced from port to port around the world, including our own Emerald City for the
first time.
The race is unique in that the crews are not professional sailors, rather adventurous spirits from various backgrounds who applied and paid their way for a journey to remember. The show reveals the many personalities through the context of the race, and the stories of personal struggles and triumphs emerge as the new sailors are tested with atrocious seas and pummeling weather that push them to their limits. The show has been distributed throughout China, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Russia, and the Americas. Excitement is brewing for the next race and the probable Race of Their Lives 3 to come, and we can only hope they sail through town again so we can be a part of the story once more.
Watching the documentary is the next best thing to actually being in the race itself and a whole lot more comfortable. You can visit the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race YouTube channel for the documentary trailer and more.
