Pakayak Packable Kayak // $1,695
We of the Pacific Northwest are well acquainted with the magic of kayaks and can often be found, paddle-in-hand, rain or shine. However, storage is always a consideration. Unless you’ve got a trailer that can accommodate the kayaks of the whole family or an exceptionally wide deck to lash your kayaks to, it can be hard to get your paddle-craft to your favorite waters. Inflatable kayaks, while easily stowable, have their drawbacks that include sinking due to minor puncture damage.
Pakayak, a company that seeks to launch the ultimate packable kayak this fall, is here to change all that. The Pakayak Bluefin 14 is a 14-foot kayak that separates into segments that fit together into an easily transported 3’ 6” bundle. The segmented kayak allegedly performs in calm and choppy waters just like its other hard-shell brethren and is loaded with classic features like two large, watertight hatches and two watertight bulkheads. Deck rigging keeps those odds and ends in place and the adjustable footpegs will accommodate just about anybody. The Pakayak Bluefin 14 is rudder-ready as well if that’s your thing.
What’s more, the Mac Daddy wheeled backpack is made specifically to carry the Pakayak Bluefin 14 when it is packaged for a trip to the islands or to the airport. The pakayak weighs a manageable 55 pounds.
