All About Steam Weekend

Once again the citizens of Tacoma are treated to an intriguing maritime event. Fortunately the rest of us can also attend! If you want to check out a little steamer eye candy, take a look at the Northwest Steamer Society’s boat web pages. –KH

One of the Northwest Steam-powered boats, many of which will be on display at the Foss Waterway Seaport’s All About Steam weekend.

See steam-powered boats as they traverse the Foss Waterway, ask questions of the boat owners, and help your kids make their own working model steam boat!

This weekend event will feature the Seaport’s wonderful “steam” exhibit and is geared to area families and steam enthusiast.. We are thrilled to welcome back the Northwest Steam Society who will bring a collection of their steamers to moor at the Seaport’s dock. The boat owners plan to share their steamers with Museum guests, demo and explain how they work, plus answer all your questions. They will provide plenty of steam whistle sounds to support this event and will be sure to attract the curious. If you have never seen these delightful boats, now is the time to come to the Seaport…they are amazing! The group plans to race their boats on the Thea Foss Waterway and take a select few of our guests out for a short cruise. The Northwest Steam Society has 300 members with all kinds of steam interests from steam cars to agricultural machinery, steam railroads and steamboats

For the younger generations, plan to purchase a steamboat kit…build it and race it in our large pond located in the Seaport’s parking lot. We will have many steam activities for kids of all ages…great fun!

Foss Waterway Seaport Executive Director Wesley Wenhardt said, “We are so excited to welcome Northwest Steam Society here for the weekend and give them the opportunity to re-connect and re-unite with the Tacoma waterfront, Puget Sound and demonstrate the incredible history of our region.”

Located on the waterfront in the last remaining century-old wooden wheat warehouse built for cargo arriving by rail and departing by sail during the early years of Tacoma, the Seaport promises activities for all. The public is invited to reconnect with the waterfront as a participant.

The Seaport’s goal is to be Puget Sound’s maritime heritage, education and event center –  a “club house, and a meeting place on the waterfront”.

Public hours will be 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

There is parking adjacent to the Seaport, and the scenic outdoor esplanade and public docks are accessible to the public. Side tie public moorage is available with power and water, and a four hour stay is free. Moorage is within walking distance of restaurants, museums and downtown.
