New to the Pacific Northwest from Maine waters is the 2018 Sabre 48 Salon Express, the builder’s most popular model with over 100 sold in six years. Of course the 2018 model we’re about to experience will have new features, like a Volvo IPS system. As the childhood rhyme goes about waiting in line, sometimes being second can indeed be the best.
Perhaps the defining aesthetic feature of the Express is the downright epic foredeck, an iconic Sabre feature. The ample foredeck space leaves plenty of “working” space if needed, as well as a great place to lounge while underway. Moving aft, both port and starboard walkways have high stainless steel railings for safety (remember, one hand for you and the other for the boat). The cockpit has enough seating for a family (or two) with partial protection from the elements thanks to the hardtop.
Inside, the large glass windows of the cabin make for a cheery, well-lit feel. Interestingly, while the cabin features the salon (with plenty of comfortable seating) and the helm, one ventures forward and down a flight of stairs to find the full galley that is positioned near the two enclosed suites (with their separate en suite enclosed heads and queen-sized berths). The layout seems like a good idea to keep the entertainment in one area and the busy cooks (and resulting pots and pans to be cleaned) below.
The Express has two inboard 550-horsepower Volvo D8 IPS 700s diesels. The manufacturer publishes a zippy cruising speed of 24 knots at 2400 RPM, with a max of 33 knots.
